Building a reading habit at home
A reading habit tends to stick better when it’s short and consistent rather than long and occasional — ten minutes most days beats an hour once a week.
Letting a child choose their own books, even ones that seem too easy or too repetitive, builds enjoyment first — the difficulty can increase naturally once reading itself feels comfortable rather than like a chore.
Reading aloud together, even once a child can read independently, keeps it a shared activity rather than a solitary task, and tends to keep interest alive longer.
