When to Go to the ER (and When Not To)

By Dr. Leem Cyprus

It's not always obvious whether something needs the Emergency department or an OPD appointment. Here's a simple way to think about it.

Go to the ER, or call 112, if you notice:

Chest pain or pressure, difficulty breathing, sudden severe pain, heavy bleeding, confusion or loss of consciousness, or a severe injury. When in doubt, treat it as an emergency — it's always safer to be checked.

An OPD appointment is usually enough for:

A persistent but mild symptom, a routine follow-up, a prescription renewal, or something that's been present for days without getting rapidly worse.

If you're ever unsure

Call 112, or come to the Emergency department directly — a quick assessment is always better than waiting at home with a symptom you're unsure about.

This information is general and not a substitute for medical advice. In an emergency, call 112.
