Preparing for a Hospital Admission

By Dr. Leem Cyprus

Whether an admission is planned or came up suddenly, a little preparation makes the whole stay easier.

Documents to bring

A valid photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, and any previous medical records, prescriptions or test results that relate to why you're being admitted.

What to pack

Comfortable clothing, toiletries, any medications you take regularly (in their original packaging), and a phone charger. Hospitals provide gowns and bedding, so you don't need to bring those.

Before you go

Confirm your insurance coverage with the billing desk if you plan to use it, and let a family member know your ward and expected length of stay.

This information is general and not a substitute for medical advice. In an emergency, call 112.
